There are two ways of doing this: -

Either

From the Insert Menu choose Symbol

Locate the character you require

Tab to or click on Insert

Or

You can enter the ASCII value for the character using the numeric keypad.  For example, to enter the Greek letter ß, hold down the ALT key and 225 on the numeric keypad.
