These prefixes have been borrowed from the International SI prefixes: -

Kilo = 1,000 - e.g. Kilogram, Kilowatt, Kilobyte (Kb)

Mega = 1,000,000 - e.g. Megawatt, Megabyte (Mb)

Giga = 1,000,000,000 - e.g. Gigawatt, Gigabyte (Gb)

For the purists

The actual values when used in the computer industry are all based upon the binary system and are powers of 2: -

Kilo = 1024 - 2^10

Mega = 1048576 - 2^20

Giga = 1073741824 - 2^30
